Bird Ecosystem
South of the eastern deciduous forest stands the southeastern coniferous forest, an ecosystem characterized by open stand of shortleaf, loblolly, longleaf, and slash pines. Characteristic birds of this ecosystem include Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Carolina Chickadees, Summer Tanagers, pine Warblers, and Bachman's Sparrows. The Southeastern Coniferous Forest is characterized by open stands of mature pines. In such areas, undergrowth becomes minimized by frequent fires. |
