Step Three, Wash Apples

16 Steps to Canning Apple Butter

Step 3, Wash Apples

We wash the apples in warm water. We fill the clean sink with water and fill it with apples. Each apple then will be scrubbed by brush to remove any residue, dirt, or spray. If apples are not sprayed they will have worms in them. The coddling moth lays its eggs in the blossom of the apple tree while it is blossoming. The apple will grow around the eggs. As the egg hatches it turns into a worm the eats it way out of the apple to emerge as a new moth. They apply the spray three times as the blossoms appear to prevent wormy apples.
