Canning Pear Butter Heat Jars - 17 Paul puts the jars we will use inverted in a shallow pan with an inch of water. He will turn on the heat in a moderate temperature so the water will gently boil. This sterilizes and heats the jars. You should not put hot food in a cold jar. We put out more jars than we expect. We will put our butter in pints and half pints.
