Canning Pears Heat the Jars - 5 Life with pears are much easier if you can them in wide-mouth jars. We will be adding hot syrup the jars when full of pears so we need the jars to be hot. You should never put hot things in a cold jar. We are using quart jars. My pan will hold only 6 quart jars so a few more sit nearby to be added to the pan when one gets used. Use moderate heat to get them hot. You may have to tip the jars from time to time if the water gets sucked up into the jars.
