Making Southern Style Cornbread 10. Sift Dry Ingredients Crank to flour sifter into the bowl below. We use the sifter for two reasons. First, it helps to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Second, it will break up any lumps in any of the ingredients we put in the sifter. Our baking powder had some lumps. When I noticed all had not mixed completely in the flour we put it all through the sifter once more.
