Bernice Chase Noll Growing Up 16. Bernice Noll in First Grade Class. For me to go to school I had to ride my bicycle five miles into town. When it was raining hard and flooding my Dad would take us and our bikes in the pickup through the water to school. Usually the water would recede during the day and we could ride home OK. Brattain School was the farthest school from our farm. It would be many years before the dams would be built to stop the flooding.
