34. My Wonderful Grandfather - James Alonzo Noll

Grampa was a wonderful and best Grampa a boy could have. He was my Dad's Father and loved us boys. He sent money to my Mom in Los Angeles so we could take the Greyhound bus from LA to Seattle each summer for about 3-4 years. We stayed with him out in Gig Harbor. Actually it lay about 5-6 miles out from the city in a 2-room cabin with no running water or electricity. There was a well. He had a 1927-8 Reo truck with solid rubber tires. It had to be cranked by hand to get started, He used it to get firewood in the surrounding forest to cook and heat the house. He took in 3 boys 3, 4 and 5 fed us and taught many important things.

Each Christmas he cut a fresh tree and sent it to us in California. He sent us on Christmas the first and only radio we had in those days of the great depression. In 1949 just before I went into the army I drove my car to Seattle to see him. He was quite weak and frail then but so happy I had come to see him. Before I got back from the Korean War he had died.

On the back of the photo Mom noted the date as October 25, 1937.
