This seems so unsafe these days, but that is what folks used in those days. Do remember, however that the speed limit was more like 35 MPH. And there was no Interstate highways and Few freeways. We drove from Los Angeles to the World's Fair on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay in 1939. My mom drove there in a 1931 Nash and we never went faster than 35 MPH. It took a few days.
