Flowers Growing at Our Home Redwood Violet - Evergreen Violet Viola sempervirens (Violet Family Violaceae) Stems creep across the ground, producing mass of thick, leathery, broadly heart-shaped leaves, and bilaterally symmetrical clear yellow flowers that face outward, hanging on short stalks barely as tall as the leaves. Flowers: about 1/2 inch wide; petals 5, the lower with maroon veins near base, the middle one with a short spur behind it; 2 upper petals bent upward. Flowers March to June in moist woods West of the Cascade Mountains from British Columbia to Central California. The mats of leaves persist throughout the winter, giving on common name and making this a choice plant for the woodland gardens.
