Trees Growing at Our Pleasant Hill Oregon Home Pacific Silver Fir - Red Silver Fir Abies amabilis Native to mountains of S.E. Alaska to Vancouver Island, Oregon and Washington. Height may reach 75m (250 feet) in the north of its range but usually more modest elsewhere. Numerous, globular male flowers grow on undersides of shoots, drying to shed pollen in April. Female flowers start red developing into deep purple cones. When crushed, the foliage gives off a strong smell of tangerines. We have discovered four of these gems growing in our woodlots. Hiding among the Douglas Firs. We discovered 3 more in 2005 as we mowed the grass around the young Douglas Firs. On to Next Tree ⇨Return to Trees - Page 2 Return to Alphabetic List |
