Trees Growing at Our Pleasant Hill Oregon Home Jeffery Pine Pinus jeffreyi Native to southern Oregon, to Lower California, altitudes 3,500 feet in the north to 10,000 feet in the south. Height to 200 feet. Flowers open in early June, males reddish, then yellow, females dark purple, about 1/3 inch long Cones are up to 8 inches long when ripe. Each scale bears a narrow sharp spine and opens to release winged seeds. Needles are in bundles of three, and are rather long and slender, producing a strong lemon smell when crushed. My son Chet gave us three of these from his home in the Southern California mountains in 2002. In 2007 it is about 1 foot high.
