1. Oregon ranks 20th nationally in all hay production, producing 2.2 % of U.S.
hay.
2. Alfalfa accounts for 41% of Oregonfs hay harvest. Oregonfs hay and forage
comprise 45.5% of the production value of the major field crops.
3. In 1999, growers harvested 401,414 acres of alfalfa.
4. Oregon-grown alfalfa in the form of hay or pasture is used mainly for animal
feed. It is the primary hay crop used in dairy production systems. Minor uses
are emerging for dietary supplements and other human health foods, and alfalfa
honey is an import commodity.
