Chet Leland Noll's Sixth Birthday

Chet was such a good reader in the first grade that the teacher had him lead one group of kids while she taught another. It was our custom to read some good books at night to the boys. Dad would read a chapter of a book with the whole family in bed. One book was about a family who lived in Berkeley after a plague had killed most everyone except a few people. It was "Earth Abides." Both boys loved it and grew to love books and reading.
