I think that Landon is thinking how he could take apart his brother's new clock and figure what made it tick, literally. Chet was very tolerant of his brother's curiosity and in may ways fostered it and encouraged it. They were then and especially today the best of friends, a fact that pleased both his Mom and Dad.
