17. Landon Makes a Good Christmas for a Lady
The Whole Family goes Christmas Shopping
On Christmas in 1965 the whole family went Christmas shopping at Capwells in Hayward, California where we lived at that time. It was the usual hectic shopping scene and it was just a few days before Christmas. The store was very crowded. Both Chet and Landon were with us and everyone was selecting presents for others. It was a festive time but very stressful for the clerks who were doing their best to help the customers who were all clamoring for attention. Some of the clerks were part time hired just for the season which added to the confusion as not everyone knew exactly what to do and where all the merchandise was located.
Landon Makes the Day
The clerk that was waiting on us seemed somewhat harried but was doing her best to accommodate us. After she had run up our purchase, Landon turned to the clerk and said out of the blue, "You sure are a nice lady." She seemed stunned at first then almost with tears in her eyes, thanked Landon and said that his remark had made her day. She was all smiles as she hugged Landon and we went on our way. Everyone had a warm feeling about it and I wondered at the wisdom and kindness of my five-year old son. He is still that way today. We were proud of him that day and still are. He is always a delight and a wonder to all that meet him.
