Landon's Chicken Entry

22. Landon Shows a Hen at the County Fair

About 1967 we were given some Aracauna eggs by the man at the feed store to hatch. Three of the eggs hatched due to Bernice's efforts. She had to turn the eggs over every 4 hours in the incubator, sprinkle them with warm water for several weeks. Aracauna chickens are an interesting breed. The chickens come in various colors with various color schemes. They also lay colored eggs. Some are green, some blue, some pink, and some different shades. They are also reputed to be lower in cholesterol. Landon was fascinated with these birds and took over their care. He also had some other White Leghorns and collected and cleaned the eggs for sale. He picked out the two best hens of his choosing and entered them in the fair. The chicken competition at the fair is an open event so he was competing with professionals from all over the country. He would go to the fair to feed them and take care of them. One day when he came back he was very upset. One of the hens was crowing. It was a rooster. Of course he had to remove the rooster from competition but he won a ribbon for the other hen. We ate the rooster whose name was "Pete." He was finger licking good.
