A New Jersey Flood

20. Landon Learns to Like Cheese, Peas and Tomatoes

While Paul was working for Pacific Telephone Company in San Francisco, he was offered a job in New Jersey working for the Bell Telephone Labs. Bernice and Paul agreed to fly to New Jersey at their request to look over the job situation and to possibly buy a home there. The Labs treated us royally and arranged for the group I would be working for to have a barbeque picnic at one of the group's home. We arrived there during a rainstorm. The picnic was quickly moved into the garage. The rain continued and it poured and poured. Eventually the street was flooded and the neighbor's swimming pool floated away. For this and other reasons we decided not to take the job in New Jersey but we told them, we would talk it over and get back to them. When we arrived home Landon was quite concerned about moving to New Jersey and was very much against it. He was about six years old. He promised that he would like cheese, peas and tomatoes, and eat them it we didn't take the job. He claimed he did not like any of them. Because we had already decided not to take the job we accepted his offer. And he was good to his word and to this day he loves both. He is especially fond of Cheese. Every time he visits Paris he comes home with a number of new cheeses.
