Our Glass Coffee Table

Mom Rides Home from Oregon in the Back Seat

On one of our vacations to Oregon we dropped the boys off at Grandma's house and we went camping on the beach. We wanted to find a ideal stump to make a glass coffee table. We needed to find just the right stump that had a suitable base and then a suitable top to lay the glass on. We had a great time looking for just such a piece. On beach after beach we search without luck. Too small, too big, rotten wood, nothing seemed suitable. We just began to give up when Paul spotted a stump just off the road near Ona Beach State Park. It lay just next to the road and suited us just fine. One problem! It was too big to get in the back seat through the door. The limbs and the base extended much more than what you see now. It had to sit in the front seat. So Mom got to ride home to California in the back seat.

We trimmed off the limbs to get a stable top, trimmed the bottom for a stable base. We had to plan very carefully. One wrong cut and you are out of luck. Bernice designed a good shape for the top, we found a glass shop to cut and smooth out the top glass. A glass float we found one day while on a fishing trip and the table emerged. Our son Landon took this picture.
