Fort Clatsop Memorial, Oregon 21. New Fort Replica in 2007 The new fort shown here incorporated some improvements form the old one that burnt down in October 3, 2005. First of all the reconstruction committee decided that the original builders did not have the where with all to construct the fort with 50 foot timbers. So the committee decided that they would build it with timbers of no longer than 20 feet. Hence the different configuration on the long wall. Secondly, the old fort had each timber cut smoothly with a chain saw so each was exactly straight. Thirdly the doorways where made wheelchair accessible, most likely not a feature of the original fort but much more suitable for today's disabled people to enjoy the fort. ⇦ Back to Scene 20 On to Scene 22 ⇨Hi-Res Pic (163K) Return to Fort Clatsop Page 3 |
