13. Fort Clatsop Meat Storage

As they built the fort, they still had to deal with the difficulty of the weather. There was constant rain and gale force winds. It hailed and on occasion it snowed. The nights were not very restful for their bedding was damp and infested with fleas! On December 16th they had completed the "Meat House" and began to smoke 16 elk they had shot. There were four cabins completed by December 22nd. Most of the fort was completed by Christmas Eve.
