Fort Steven's State Park 10. Fort Steven's Disappearing Gun Fort Stevens enjoys the distinction of being the only military installation in the continental United States to be fired on since the War of 1812. On the night of June 21, 1942, the Fort was the target of a Japanese submarine I-125. that fired 17 shells in the vicinity of the Fort. The shelling caused no damage and Fort Stevens did not return fire. The commander of the sub thought the location had a submarine base. No one could get an order to fire as general pandemonium prevailed. ⇦ Back to Scene 9 On to Scene 11 ⇨Hi-Res Pic (227K) ⇦ Back to Fort Steven's Choices Page 2 |
