Hatfield Marine Science Center, Newport, Oregon Coast 3. Hatfield Marine Research Using research vessels, remotely operated vehicles and autonomous instruments such as hydrophones and rumbleometers, scientists from the Hatfield Marine Science Center are probing the deep-sea frontier. One of our central goals is to acquire real-time oceanographic data that can be used to make predictions that will save lives that are currently lost to natural disasters. This multimedia program features videos captured from separate corners of the Ring of Fire: from the Axial Volcano located in the spreading center 300 miles off our northwest coast, to the hot springs found in the back arc of the Marianas in the western Pacific, and on to the South Shetland Islands rising directly off of Antarctica. Outstanding images of undersea volcanic eruptions and exotic deep-sea fauna will capture your imagination while ⇦ Back to Page 2 On to Page 4 ⇨Hi-Res Pic (151K) Return to Hatfield Center Choices |
