Yaquina Head Natural Area
4. Inside the Yaquina Head Visitors Center Many exhibits and signs tell the story of this part of the Oregon coast. It is well worth a visit to the visitor's center. Here Bernice finds out that the volunteer lives in the same town we do. She also shows her Golden Age Passport. The Golden Age Passport cost $10 one time and is good for your lifetime at all US Government site everywhere. You have to be 62 years or older to get one. All members in the party get in free. So next time you go take Grandpa or Grandma. The Yaquina Head lighthouse is a classic seacoast tower, a design more often found on the east coast. At 93 feet tall, it is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon, and is very similar in design to the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse in central California. Construction began in 1871, and a planned 1872 lighting was delayed when it was discovered that part of the lens (shipped from France) was missing. It was finally lit on August 20, 1873. ⇦ Back to Page 3 On to Page 5 ⇨Return to Yaquina Head Page 1 |
