Cliff Dwellings

Mesa Verde NP, Colorado

21. Cliff Dwellings

Site 499, excavated in 1953, was located in the Far View area, at the northern end of the mesa. The site contained 12 rooms, two kivas and a round tower; it yielded six burials, several thousand shards and a large number of bone and stone artifacts. This pueblo belonged to the Pueblo II-III period. As the purpose of the excavation was to use the ruin as an interpretive exhibit, the park staff stabilized the ruin after excavation.
