Heartleaf Buckwheat (Northern Desert Buckwheat)

Eriogonum compositum - Locally common, late spring-early summer. perennial, 8-20 in. Clump of large basal leaves, large flat flower head. Leaves to 10 in. long, heart-shaped, on petioles longer than leaves, green above, with dense, white fuzzy hairs underneath. Flower heads cream or yellow on sturdy 8-20 in. stems, leaf-like bract at joint of stem and flower stalks. Grows in sandy loam, gravelly soils, talus, on cliffs and open rocky slopes, at low to high elevations. Size of leaves and inflorescence can vary greatly with local conditions. Native.
