Rose Campion

Lychnis coronaria - Gray-wooly perennial from a usually branched stem base; stems 1 to several, stout, unbranched, leafy, 40-100 cm tall. Leaves Basal, numerous, lance-shaped, 5-10 cm long; stem leaves opposite, 5-10 pairs from swollen nodes, gradually reduced in size and becoming stalkless up the stem. Flowers showy, deep-red; sepals about 15 mm long, hairy, veined; blade of petals 10-15 mm long, heart-shaped; 5 styles; several in a loosely branched, flat-topped cluster. Found at roadsides, railroad right-of-ways, clearings, waste places, common at low elevations.
