Chokecherry, Common Chokecherry

Prunus virginiana Common, late-spring, perennial, 2-12 ft. Shrub or small tree. Leaves2-3 in., deciduous, oblong, or oval, with rounded base and pointed tips, finely toothed. White flowers, many, in clusters that are much longer then wide. Fruit dark red or purple to black. Grows in wooded, rocky slopes, edges of forests, along streams, at low to mid elevations. Found throughout western North America excluding Alaska. Important food for birds. Native.
