Purple Dead-Nettle (Red Henbit)

Lamium purpureum - Locally common, all spring and summer, annual, 4-12 in. Decumbent to erect, hairy to smooth. Square stems are branched from base. Leaves opposite, middle and upper with short petioles, round to egg-shaped, with heart-shaped base, toothed. Flowers under leaves, upper lip hood-shaped, lower lip with 3 small lobes. Pink to purple, often with spots. Grows in disturbed soils, meadows, gardens, at low elevations. Nonnative. Henbit comes from the fact that hens like to nibble on the leaves. This nettle-like plant are dead in that they don't sting when touched.
