Cascade Downingia

Downingia yina - Locally common, late-spring-early summer, annual, 1-4 in. Erect to decumbent., grows in masses. Stem branching. Leaves small, sessile, linear to lance-shaped, with pointed tip, often withered by flowering time. Flowers with long ovary tube sustain 5-bracted calyx topped by coralla. Flower corolla blue, about 1/3 in. across, with 2 lips; lower 2 yellow spots surrounded by white and 3 rounded blue lobes with small tooth at tip. Upper lip blue, with 2 short lobes. Stamen column does not extend above corolla. Found in lakes, ponds, vernal wet areas, below 5400 ft. Native.
