Chocolate Lily (Kamchatka fritillary)

Fritillaria camschatcensis (Fritillaria lanceolata) - Locally common, early summer, perennial, 1-2. Stem erect, unbranched. Leaves entirely along stem; 1-3 whorls of 3-10 lance-shaped leaves to 3 in. long. Flowers 1 to several from upper leaf axil on short stalks. Flower often with putrid odor, bronze, chocolate, or liver-colored, widely bell-shaped, with petals slightly turned back, small parallel ridges on inside. Grows in wet soils that never dry in coastal areas and rain forests. The odor attracts pollinators, usually flies.
