Pestle Shaped Coral Mushroom

Clavariadelphus pistillaris Fruit body 7-30 cm high, 2-6 cm wide, forming a large club swollen at its apex; light yellow to deep ochre, with a purplish-lavender bloom over the stem; dry, smooth, with longitudinal wrinkles on the lower part of the club; never branching. Flesh firm then soft and spongy; white, bruising brownish. Odor sickly, mushroomy. Taste mild to bitter. Spores ellipsoid, smooth. Deposit white to yellowish. Habitat gregarious to solitary in leaf litter, especially beech. Found widespread in North America and also in Europe. Season July-October. Edible.
