Nipplewort

Lapsana Communis - Nipplewort is an un likely member of the sunflower family. The small heads have 5 to 13 pale yellow ray flowers that resemble petals. The generic name "Lapsana," means cress or mustard in Greek, suggesting a fanciful resemblance to members of the mustard family. It varies in height from less than a foot to more than three feet. This Eurasian weed is now widely established in the Northern United States and Canada. It usually grows in cultivated fields and waste areas, but also invades open forests. We have scattered plants in our woodlands. Two Oxeye daisies stand as sentries to this flower.
