Hairy Paintbrush (Hairy Owlclover)

Castilleja tenuis - Locally common, midsummer, annual, 4-18 in. Upright hairy annual. Stems finely hairy. Leaves long, thin, pointed. Flower bracts less than 1 in. long, 1/2 - 1 1/2 in. wide, with 3-7 thin lance-shaped lobes, green or slightly tipped with dull reddish brown, not showy. Flowers white, occasionally yellow; flower beak straight, extending just beyond bracts. Grows in moist open fields, meadows at low to mid elevations. Native.
