Pine Drops

Pterospora andromedea - Common, midsummer, perennial, 1-3 ft. Erect, reddish brown, densely sticky plant with small narrow scale-like leaves. Spikes of many flowers on arched stalks hang from top 1/2 of stem. Petals yellow, pink, or white, fused to form urn-shaped flowers to 1/3 inch. long, nearly as wide. Rounded seed capsules persist on dried darkened stems through winter. Grows in humus in mixed forests at low to high elevations. A saprophyte living in association with conifer trees and manzanita. Native.
