Wildflowers Found in Oregon Western Serviceberry (Saskatoon) Amelanchier alnifolia - Common, midspring, perennial, 5-20 ft. Deciduous shrub. Roots spread out forming colonies of gray to reddish brown branched bushes. Leaves alternate, thin, oval to round, serrate on upper 1/2. Flowers 3-15, pure white, forming lusters, each blossom about 1 1/4 in. across with 5 narrow petals, 10-20 stamens. Fruit red, becoming deep purple-black. Grows in open meadows, fencerows, woodlands, streambanks, conifer forests, at low to high elevations. Fruit is good for making jelly Native.
