1. A North American finch (Cardinalis cardinalis) having a crested head, a short, thick bill, and bright red plumage in the male. Called a cardinal because of its color, cardinal. Cardinals are admired or the bright red color.
2. A high church official, ranking just below the pope. The Cardinals will choose a new Pope.
