Separate

Divide
implies separation by or as if by cutting, splitting, or branching into parts,
portions, or shares; the term is often used to refer to separation into
opposing or hostile groups: We divided the orange into segments. 'A house
divided against itself cannot stand.
Part
refers most often to the separation of closely associated persons or things:
None shall part us from each other.
Sever
usually implies abruptness and force in the cutting off of a part from the
whole or the breaking up of an association or a relationship: His head was
nearly severed from his body. The United States severed diplomatic relations
with Cuba in 1961.
Sunder
stresses violent tearing or wrenching apart: The country was sundered by civil
war into two embattled states.
Divorce
implies the separation of the elements of a relationship or union: There were a
priest and a soldier, two classes of men circumstantially divorced from the
kind and homely ties of life.
