3. Entrance to the Huoshan Dam

Here Bernice poses on the dam itself. This dam was the first dam built after the formation of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. The Russians started and then abandoned the construction in a huff over Chinese/Russian policies. The Chinese then completed the dam themselves in a grand show of engineering. Chairman Mao visited the completed dam and wrote an inscription. It is emblazoned high on the dam now to commemorate the occasion. You can see the entrance to the dam below and to the left. We walked up some very steep stairs to get to the top of the dam.
