Dragon Boat Races in Sichuan
2. Wait for Water Taxi
According to the Chinese traditional calendar, Duanwu jíe, known in English
as the Dragon Boat Festival, takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar
month of each year.
We have been invited by the government to see the dragon boat races. It takes
place on a river out in the countryside. The area is not open to foreigners so
the police escort us. We are taken there by bus. After a short wait a ferryboat
takes us by to a barge in the river so we have a first class view of the event.
There are a number of barges for VIPs including many high-ranking officials.
