Guangdong Province
Translation "Eastern Expanse" Guangdong is an economic powerhouse in southern China but difficulties in some financial institutions has caused the central government to clamp down on this freewheeling province. More than 60,000 foreign enterprises have gone into business here since 1979. Guangdong was also the site of three or the four special economic zones --- Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shantou --- which offered special and generous tax incentives. Guangdong is nationally number 1 in GDP, Urban population income, retail sales, exports, imports, and ownership of motorcycles and air conditioners. Hong Kong accounts for 2/3 of firms investing in the province. |
