Shanxi Province
Translation "West of the Mountains" Shanxi is China's biggest coal producer but lacks the transport to distribute it. It is a depressed, landlocked area dominated by plateau almost 4,000 feet above sea level. Thick deposits of yellow loess in places 300 feet deep characterize the landscape. The only significant agricultural products are milk and beef. Coal, iron ore, and calcium carbide are the province's mineral contributions. Unemployment is high. |
