The Nanjing Yangzi River Bridge

Nanjing City, Jiangsu, China

24. The Nanjing Yangzi River Bridge in 1985

We arrived in Nanjing in the middle of the night at about 1:00 AM. We got a man on a three-wheel bike to take us to a hotel. It was raining and the people who were to meet us did not come to meet us because no one had called them to say what time we were coming. We got to a hotel and the next day someone called and was most relieved that we were there and OK. They then took us on a tour of the city. This Russians started this bridge and when they left they took all the plans. The Chinese were quite proud that they had completed it by themselves afterwards. The bridge was completed December 23, 1968 after it was abandoned by the Russians in 1960. The bridge is double decked with rail traffic on the lower deck. The upper deck is 6,500 meters long.
