6. Bernice Walks to the Hotel

Bernice and I are walking to the big hotel in town today. This is the main street in the city, People's Road South. Every city in China has a People's Road. This street is like many main streets. First there is a sidewalk that we are on made of paving blocks carefully laid in by hand. To the right is a bike lane, then a row of trees, then four lanes for cars, then more trees, another bike lane, and finally a sidewalk on the far side. Often the bike lane is packed. This young man is using a yoke to carry two big baskets of fruit. It takes a learned skill to walk with a yoke like this.
