30. We Stay in Apartments at Hungnam We finally arrived at Hungnam and were assigned to these wonderful apartments to live. They gave me another truck and we were outfitted with equipment to replace what had been lost. The entire 10th Corps was being evacuated from the port of Hungnam to Pusan. Many thousands of troops await transport to the south. Shortly before we left Sinchon all truck drivers had been given assignments to go to specified villages to pick up North Korean Volunteers who wanted to join the South Korean army. I had picked up some 45 men on my 3/4-ton truck. The apartment is nice compared to the living quarters we have had for the last few months.
Built in
the Japanese style they have fireplaces to keep us warm. We set up our cots
and relax for a short while. We must wait our turn for evacuation. I spent some
time cleaning our 50 Cal machine gun. Snow has begun to fall and it hides some
of the ugliness of the war. The Chinese army is too battered to attack the
Hungnam perimeter.
