29. Our Truck Turns Over with Paul Noll Driving It We get only a few miles before disaster falls on us. My truck skids off the road and turns over. You can see chains on all four wheels and how narrow the road is. The front wheel went off the road and I knew it was lost. I yelled out to jump and gunned the engine to keep it on the road as long as I could. After all were out it flipped over and on top of me. The high load protected me. We set fire to it and placed explosives in the truck. We then had to unload the other truck so there would be enough room for all the men. So we lost the entire station, everything was gone. I was sick and scared at what they might do to me. We then drove on and joined a long column of army trucks, tanks, jeeps and assorted vehicles going south to safety. I got a ride on a partially disabled empty truck and spent a miserable 2 days to get to Hamhung. The temperatures were 30-40 below zero. You ate what you could find. Men were sharing and the Chinese were not far behind us. If a truck stalled it was pushed off the road and destroyed by a demolition squad in the rear. We have about a 100 miles to get to Hungnam. The column traveled at a snails pace. When we got to Hungnam they said nothing and just assigned me another truck. Hi-Res Pic (108K) ⇦ Back to Scene 28 Return to Page 4 On to Scene 30 ⇨ |
