581st Radio Relay Company Going to Japan (1950) | |
1. 581st at Camp Gordon, GA.
In 1950 Gordon was a Camp, later it was upgraded to a Fort. When news of the Korean War was announced, it didn't take long to find out we were going to Korea. Teams were formed of 5 men each. I was assigned to team E07. Luck determined whether you got on a relay team and got to climb mountains or a terminal team generally stationed in a Unit Headquarters. I was put on a mountain team. Once the teams were formed, we unpacked all of the equipment, tested it, and then repacked it for shipment over seas. It took two weeks of long hours to accomplish this task. Everything had to be wrapped in waterproof covering and then sealed in wooden crates. Teams cut the wood for boxes, others put them in the crates and others nailed the lids on. It was 18 hour days. |
