3. Camp Stoneman, Pittsburg, California Our train unloaded us here at Camp Stoneman on August 11, 1950. Housed and fed, we endured numerous shots, tests and a lot of boredom. My mom and brother Loren came to see me for a few evenings and to see me off to Korea. My Mom was about 45 years old then but got lots of whistles from many GIs as we walked around the camp. On August 14th, 1950 we boarded the ferry to travel down the Sacramento River to Fort Mason, in San Francisco. Though the sound of thousands of marching feet is but a memory today, not so very long ago Camp Stoneman was the principal "jumping off point" for several years later during the Korean War. Consisting of more than 2,500 sprawling acres, Camp Stoneman sprang to life near the town of Pittsburg in 1942 to act as the San Francisco Port of Embarkation's primary troop staging center.
