581st Radio Relay Company Going to Japan (1950)
4. 581st Arrives at Fort Mason, San Francisco, California The ferry from Camp Stoneman unloaded us here at Fort Mason on August 14th, 1950. Each of us carried our duffle bags, carbine and gear off the boat. They then marched us in ranks a distance to the pier where our troopship, the USS Randall waited for us. Fort Mason was the jumping off point for troops going overseas in World War II and then later in the Korean conflict. It still bothers me to refer it to a "Police Action" although I understand the political reason. We marched directly aboard the troopship and they directed us below to our assigned stateroom. My stateroom had bunks 7 high at I had perhaps 400 roommates. Stowing my gear to my assigned bunk. I hurried up to the deck in time to see the wrong side of the Golden Gate Bridge fading into the distance. The ship had gotten underway as soon as the troops had boarded. ⇦ Back to Page 3 Return to Page 1 On to Page 5 ⇨ |
