3. "Piggy San" Relay Station Tents

In this picture the site is still being constructed, with most of the work being done by ROK troops and civilian workers. The radio shack was located in a bunker dug into the mountainside and generators were in an open-faced bunker. We slept in the squad tent located in the left center of the picture. The Koreans slept on straw mats in various other tents. Sometime after arriving we were told by a courier that we were on the wrong mountain, but we never moved. One night camp fires appeared from across a narrow valley where no one should have been. The area was raked with machine gun fire. Sparks were flying from fires scattered by bullets or boots. We never saw any more fires. Another night we were awakened by an explosion nearby. It was not until morning that a body could be seen in the mined area. No one knew the location of the other mines so the body lay quite some time until a ROK Engineer unit came in and retrieved it. It was a Korean, but we never knew who he was or why he was trying to get inside the compound.
