North Korean Trenches Around Wonson 581st Radio Relay Company at Wonson (1950)
14. North Korean Trenches

The North Korean army had dug trenches almost the entire coast of Korea. But the enormous fire power of the navy had blasted them very much and they were somewhat demoralized. The harbor in Wonson had been mined and the ships had to wait for sometime while minesweepers cleared the mine fields before ships could come in. The first night I was in the city we spent in a High School Gym. There were still many North Korean flags and much propaganda around. We had a few prisoners who looked quite forlorn. The civilian population seemed quite happy to see us and was extremely friendly and helpful to us. They seemed short of food and we shared some of our food with them when we could. The trenches went on for miles and miles.
